Facts about Dragons
'Wild' dragons speak mentally to each other along with noises (grunts, growls, hiss's and such)
'Wild' dragons by 'default' speak to every one in the vicinity when speaking mentally. They have to focus in order to speak to one individual dragon through a mental connection. However, for whatever reason they cannot seem to 'talk' to humans through mental connections.
Wild dragons have a much farther mental connection span, reaching up to 500ft away. However since the decline of the dragons it's become rarer and rarer for a wild to find another dragon that close.
In times of great distress a wild dragon can send out a 'beacon' of distress. Wilds do not consciously know how to do this, it just happens, and this distress signal will reach every dragon on earth.
When dragons started to be killed their cries rang out across the lands and the howls and roars of dragons who could share and feel their pain could be heard. These distress signals are few in number, now that there are so few dragons.
The mental connection is shared between the bonded human and the dragon.
This connection can be 'blocked' as if a door were being shut by either the dragon or human.
Our bonded dragons are different from the 'Wild' dragons in the way they speak mentally. Instead of automatically projecting to everyone our Bonded dragons are used to speaking through a mental connection with just one person, as that is how they grew up and they have to focus and work to actually project to the people around them. With some work the dragon will be able to project to the people around them with little to no work.
Our Bonded dragons also speak in hiss's, grunts, growls and other such vocal communication.
The mental connection between our bonded dragon and rider seems to fade if the human and dragon are separated by about 200ft or so. Think of it like this: Someone is shouting at you and you start walking off. Their voice gets fainter and fainter until it disappears. This is what the bonded will experience.
When speaking in a mental connection with your bonded dragon usually you don't 'feel' anything brushing against your mind or 'touching' you, it's a solid clear connection as if you and I were standing next to each other and speaking. However the dragons can easily 'brush' against your mind like a fluttering cloth if they want your attention. Humans can do the same to their dragons but it is much harder and frustrating to figure out and follow through with.
If either the dragon or the human looses consciousness the connection does not 'fade' or 'die'. The connection still remains as it last was. This means that if the human bonded (or dragon) 'closed' the door to the connection then it will stay that way until they wake. If the connection was 'left open' as would be normal between a bonded pair then it's just 'black silence' as one described it. So the bonded who is not unconscious can still sense that their bonded is living but that is about it. They cannot talk or communicate with them, though they may yell or 'nudge' their bonded over the connection. Sometimes this has worked to bring around the bonded who is unconscious.
The distress signal that wild dragons do can also be preformed between bonded dragon and human. The human's can't send out this signal but they can hear and sense it if their dragon sends one out. However if you, as a bonded, hear this signal then you are most likely too late, in this day and age, to save your dragon, prepare for the worst my friend.
Really people... REALLY hope that you never hear this signal. it is one of pure pain, ice cold terror and heart wrenching despair. This signal is sent out (by both bonded and wild) usually when the dragon is loosing consciousness and is in great physical or mental pain and, usually, the dragon is dying.
The distress signal is something that dragons can not control when they send it out. It just happens like you can't control your heart beat. This sort of thing happens when the dragon is dying. In old times there were so many dragons that if this signal was sent out then there was a very real chance that the dragon could be saved by one of it's kind.
